The product group of protective films includes a very broad range of polyethylene films. Specific applications may also require alternative materials such as other polyolefins, polyester, PVC, or barrier films as the base material. When combined with numerous other product components in packaging, these can be precisely tailored to create individual surface protection. Polyethylene has proven to be the main raw material used in the films. In practice, protective films are used with and without adhesive systems. Protective films without adhesive are also known as adhesion films.

These very smooth and soft plastic films (PVC or PE) adhere to smooth surfaces without any adhesive. The adhesion is achieved through loose molecular bonds between the boundary layers of the surfaces, the film, and the material it is applied to. The contact area must be as large as possible to allow these weak forces to have a noticeable effect.

This is only possible on truly smooth surfaces, such as those of glass, porcelain, polished metal, and certain plastics. To protect other materials with less smooth surfaces, various adhesive systems based on natural rubber and acrylic adhesives, either solvent-based or water-based, are used.
